Transmissions are one of the most complex parts of your vehicle.
The constant changing of gears to optimize performance and fuel economy is done by the transmission. In a manual transmission, the driver makes the decision to change gears. In an automatic transmission, a computer determines the correct gear based on what speed the vehicle is going and how hard the driver is pushing on the accelerator pedal.
Transmissions fail in a variety of ways.
The most common cause of any transmission failure, (automatic or manual) is a worn or “burnt” clutch. Manual transmissions have the clutch mounted as a separate serviceable unit. Automatic transmissions have multiple clutches mounted inside the actual transmission requiring a full rebuild to repair.
Automatic transmissions also have many electronic actuators and sensors used to allow the computer to control and monitor the shifting of the vehicle. These parts can fail to cause the transmission to not shift properly. It is critical that an accurate diagnosis is made to avoid condemning the entire transmission when just a simple sensor needs to be replaced.
There are also a few other types of transmissions CVT’s, dual-clutch automatics, dry clutch automatics, electronically shifted manuals. No matter the type of transmission WE can properly service it at Brums Ultimate Repair.
